The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening women age 65 years or older for osteoporosis to prevent osteoporotic fractures (fractures that happen when bones weakened by osteoporosis break). USPSTF also recommends screening for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women younger than 65 years who are at increased risk for an osteoporotic fracture.
USPSTF found insufficient evidence to assess whether the benefits of screening men for osteoporosis to prevent fractures outweigh the harms.
